2018-12-10 – The Rant

Like many of you, I use computers for all sorts of things.  These may include productivity, creative outlet, entertainment, “fantasies”, etc.  And like many of you I am perpetually fucking annoyed by them.  I think it’s fair to say that I know my way around computers better than the vast majority of people in this country.  And yet – AND YET! – I am constantly fighting with the damn things to get them to do what I want them to do.  I am not asking them to do things that are in any way approaching magical.  Like for example asking them to render 2D representations of a fictional 3D  world at 60+ frames per second (gaming) – I do not ask them to do that.  Or asking them to “recognize” a cat in a ball pit (AI/computer vision/etc) – I do not ask them to do that ether.

What I asked my computer to do is take a screenshot and it failed.  Screenshots have been working flawlessly for years, but since I recently upgraded my operating system that functionality stopped working.  Now why would someone change a perfectly functional component of a system is beyond me.  But they did, they didn’t test their changes, and it cost me 30 minutes of my life to get back functionality that was working perfectly fine until someone put their sticky fingers all over it.  That’s the definition of fixing things that aren’t broken.  Leave it alone.  Just leave it alone.
