I love BBWs – part 1

I think this is my new favorite image macro (it’s not a meme, you savage!)

It very succinctly represents … life (not to put too much pressure on your comic, Van Oktop).  The devil, as they say in platitude college, is in the details.  Smart people choose to undertake endeavors where the details are on the less laborious side.  Other people choose to jam out with their dog to to Snap! on a Saturday night.  And the stupid people choose to undertake endeavors where the details are on the more laborious side. Since this is the website of a fella (him/it/coffee/black) who spent two years reinventing the house thermostat from first principles, you can guess where this is going.

From experience, having dabbled in computers, refrigeration, electronics design, establishing meaningful social bonds, I can tell you that details in metal fabrication are the most laborious of all of them. Which makes sense.  With metal fabrication you’re literally willing stuff into existence by cutting and fusing crystals*.  That’s pretty metal.  With that being said, making sense doesn’t make it less laborious.

In software development, a mistake is a line of code and a recompile.  With electronics design it’s a board rework.  With refrigeration it’s a replacement valve or a calculation.  With metal fabrication you have to part the crystalline structure of that heavy thing using brute force and then re-combine it using hand-held lightening powered by vegetation that died before fungus evolved.

Neato.

* Yes I know metal is a polycrystal.
